Almost 1 in 100 women suffer from bladder irritation with lower pelvic pressure and pain that are often confused as a urinary tract infection (UTI). In these cases, urine cultures are negative and antibiotics do not help. The symptoms of an irritated bladder can be overwhelming with constant bladder discomfort and a constant need to urinate, as well as localized pain (vulvodynia) that make the most intimate of contacts unbearable. Traveling for even just one day out of the house can seem daunting.

These symptoms can worsen by emotional and physical stress, such as exercise, extremes in weather and medical procedures. However, histamine-rich foods (e.g. avocado, cheese, sardines, spices, spinach, tuna, tomatoes) and environmental allergies can also precipitate or worsen symptoms. Bladder damage could be caused by allergic, environmental, pathogenic, stress and toxic triggers that damage the mucosa, the protective layer of the bladder, directly or via activation of mast leading to sensitization of sensory nerves eliciting pain. The mucosa is protected by a layer of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), especially chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. Replenishment of the GAG layer can help to reduce bladder discomfort.
